Andrés Rivera nació en Santiago, Chile y se tituló de Geógrafo de la Universidad de Chile. Trabaja en glaciología desde 1988. Desde aquel entonces, ha estudiado las variaciones frontales, areales y volumétricas de los glaciares de Chile, en particular en Patagonia, la región de los Lagos y Chile Central. En el año 1997, obtuvo el Magíster en Geografía de la Universidad de Chile, después de desarrollar estudios en el Norte Grande del país. En el año 2004, Andrés obtuvo su grado de Doctor en Glaciología en la Universidad de Bristol, Inglaterra, donde trabajó en conjunto con Jonathan Bamber y el Centro de Glaciología de dicha universidad. Su tema de tesis estuvo relacionado con las investigaciones de balance de masa en el Campo de Hielo Sur. Desde mediados de la década de los 90, Andrés ha estado involucrado en varios proyectos de investigación glaciológica en Antártica, destacando sus estudios en la zona de Patriot Hills, en la Península Antártica, en las travesías terrestres al polo Sur (2004), al lago Subglacial Ellsworth (2006), al Polo de Inaccesibilidad (2007/2008) y más recientemente al Glaciar Unión y sus alrededores. Andrés participó activamente en las campañas aerotransportadas organizadas por el CECS, la NASA y la Armada de Chile en los años 2002, 2004 y 2008, cuando se midió entre otras regiones, los glaciares del Mar de Amundsen. Otra zona de interés permanente para Andrés ha sido la de los Campos de hielo Patagónicos Norte y Sur, donde ha llevado a cabo numerosas actividades de terreno, y últimamente, levantamientos con sensores aerotransportados. En la región centro-Sur de Chile, Andrés ha realizado numerosas investigaciones sobre las relaciones entre glaciares y volcanes, en especial de conos volcánicos activos semi-cubiertos por hielo. Entre los principales métodos y técnicas de interés para Andrés, destacan el uso de sensores remotos satelitales, altimetría láser, fotogrametría, empleo de receptores GPS, mediciones de espesor de hielo con sistemas de radio-eco-sondaje y mediciones de balance energético de glaciares. Entre sus colaboraciones internacionales, destacan los trabajos en conjunto con investigadores Japoneses, Británicos, Suizos, Alemanes y Norteamericanos.
