Bachelor of Science, Universidad de Chile (1975). Ph.D. (Biophysics), Brandeis University (1980). Postdoctoral, Department of Physics and Biology, University of California (La Jolla, 1980-1984). Visiting Professor, School of Biological Sciences, P. Universidad Católica (1985-86). Assistant Professor, Departments of Physiology and Anesthesiology, Duke University Medical School (1986-89). Associate Professor, Facultad de Ciencias, Universidad de Chile (1990-2000). CECs Investigator (1987 -). Fellow of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (1981-1982) and the Guggenheim Foundation (1996). Endowed Chair of Excellence (CONACYT, Mexico, 1994). Presidential Chair in Science (Chile, 1996-2001). Rectoral Medal from the Universidad de Chile (1996, 2004). International Fellow of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (1997-2007). National Natural Science Award (2004). His current research focuses on communities of extremophile organisms that live in temperate glaciers and salt deposit in the high plateau. These unique environments are experiencing in the past or are currently undergoing dramatic changes geophysicists. Many questions about ecology, evolution and physiology of these insects remain unanswered. Research efforts will emphasize molecular approaches to investigate aspects of population, evolutionary and physiological extremophiles in glaciers, salt deposit and other extreme environments. Also continue to explore its potential as environmental paleobioindicadores past and as climate proxies .
