Dulce Ma. Figueiras Fierro was born in Puebla, Mexico. She completed her bachelor´s degree in Biology in Benemerita Universidad Autonoma de Puebla (BUAP), during this process and in the Master´s degree, as a fellow CONACyt, in the Facultad de Ciencias de la Universidad Nacional Autonoma de México (UNAM), at the Instituto de Biotecnología (IBT), studied and applied electrophysiological patch-clamp technique to characterize ion channels in both mesophilic cells of the halophyte Mesembryanthemium crystallynum as in a vacuolar cell membrane in Arabidopsis thaliana, obtaining the title of Master of Biological Sciences in 2009. Later in the same institution and same year, Dulce entry the PhD program of Biological Sciences of the Facultad de Ciencias, working in the Department of Genetics and Developmental Biology of the IBT, UNAM with professor Alberto Darszon, group that specializes in the physiology of the spermatozoid, with particular interest in the primordial role that the ionic channels play in their main functions. The PhD project consisted in identifying and characterizing electrophysiological in CFTR mouse sperm, a chloride channel modulated by cAMP/PKA and ATP in different systems and that is mutated in cystic fibrosis. This research involved a series of experiments including the study of the mechanisms that regulate the activity of the channels, its pharmacology, and its important participation in sperm capacitation. Dulce had to corroborate that the activators and inhibitors of CFTR did not stimulate other ionic currents of Cl- from spermatozoa. For the above, she made a stay in the laboratory of investigator Francisco Sepulveda at the Centro de Estudios Cientificos, CECs, which has mice that have the mutant CFTR, Cftr-ΔF508, which is not functional. Then she return to Mexico and received a PhD in Biological Sciences. She then completed a brief postdoctoral stay (September 2014-February 2015) at the Instituto de Fisiologia Celular and IBT, UNAM participating in a project to develop male contraceptive based on specific inhibition of two specific channels of mammalian sperm (CatSper and Slo3), funded by a grant from the Secretary of Science, Technology and Innovation of México City. At the beginning of 2016, Dulce returned to join the CECs as a postdoctoral research. The main lines of research in which she works relate to the study, identification and regulation of K+ channels in mammalian neuroepithelia.
