CECs integrates Corporation "Valdivia City of University and Knowledge"

Through the signature of the Corporation "Valdivia City of University and Knowledge" the town of Valdivia represented by Mayor Omar Sabat , with universities Santo Tomas, San Sebastian , Austral de Chile and the Center for Scientific Studies ( CECs ) formalized with this Institution the work that began early in 2008 and seek to consolidate Valdivia as a model city in terms of knowledge development.

During 4 of years working together, this year universities and institutions participating in the new corporation consolidated its work in a nonprofit corporation that will support future projects in the areas of knowledge development held by the commune of Valdivia and region.

During the ceremony Sabat Omar emphasized the goals and objectives that the project has in Valdivia and the region, pointing out the creation of a joint working protocol and its work plan in the short, medium and long during this development process since 2008 with. "This is a project that needs the support of regional authorities and each of the member institutions to begin a process that will bring joint activities between universities and science through the CECs and above all create a network of support for cooperation and participation of university , but mostly this will open a path to work hand in hand with the community, "said the communal authority .

Meanwhile Fernando Basilio , architect in residence and representative of the Center for Scientific Studies (CECs) indicated that " CECs since its installation in Valdivia and beyond their work in scientific research , has committed to the city by a close relationship with Municipality leaving many testimonies which have been configured as a positive impact and wide recognition. " Also said that" the participation of CECs in this new Corporation led by the Municipality of Valdivia and with three other universities , will serve to continue providing initiatives in the interest of not only student and academic community. "

After this ceremony the board of the corporation was temporarily integrated as follows : President: Mr. Omar Sabat , Vice-President Mr. Basil Fernando , Secretary: Mr. Victor Cubillos , Treasurer: Mr. Angelo Romano and Director: Ms. Laura Bertolotto charges will be provisional pending the completion of the first meeting of the corporation.

Objectives of the Corporation

The Corporation Valdivia University and Knowledge City has set its goals to start its first run .
The objectives of the Corporation are:
a) Conduct initiatives to increase the number of students the region in the undergraduate and graduate Programs
b) Contribute in developing an efficient and attractive range of public and private services to satisfy the requirements of students, academics, scientists and researchers
c ) Promote the development of university activities , scientific , artistic and cultural activities in the region.
d ) Promote the improvement of urban conditions in the city of Valdivia in order to provide a better quality of life for students, academics and scientists to stay in it , strengthening the scientific work in the region.
e) Establish and promote an image of Valdivia as a town of university and knowledge that with comparative and competitive advantages may position in the domestic and international choice.


El Centro de Estudios Científicos (CECs) es una corporación de derecho privado, sin fines de lucro, dedicada al desarrollo, fomento y difusión de la investigación científica. El CECs fue fundado en 1984 como el Centro de Estudios Científicos de Santiago donde funcionó en una casa arrendada hasta el año 2000, momento en el que se mudó a Valdivia donde evolucionó para llegar a ser lo que es hoy. Desde su fundación el CECs ha sido dirigido por el físico Claudio Bunster. Luego de treinta y seis años de existencia, el CECs ha decidido renovar su sitio web, el cual se encuentra actualmente en construcción. En el intertanto las consultas pueden ser dirigidas a info@cecs.cl. Lo que sigue es un extracto de un folleto que fue producido justo después de que el centro se trasladara a Valdivia. Una pequeña banda de investigadores del Centro de Estudios Científicos (CECs) en Valdivia, Chile, comparte un sueño audaz, anticuado en esta era de la Gran Ciencia – la búsqueda irrestricta del conocimiento, en un pequeño instituto independiente de investigación de primera calidad. Sus miembros se han reunido durante un lapso de tiempo que abarca ya, más de un cuarto de siglo, para emprender una aventura intelectual que es riesgosa, estimulante y tremendamente productiva.

Ubicado entre los Andes y el Pacífico, en esta pequeña ciudad del sur, el CECs es uno de los pocos institutos en el mundo que trabajan en investigación de vanguardia en múltiples disciplinas, sin recibir recursos o estar afiliada a ninguna institución anfitriona. Sus investigadores son libres para desarrollar su mejor ciencia con independencia de las modas y sin restricciones burocráticas, en una atmósfera de colaboración y apoyo mutuo. El fruto de este esfuerzo se traduce en un flujo permanente de ideas innovadoras, con estudiantes altamente capacitados y resultados que son publicados en revistas especializadas. El Centro ha demostrado lo errado de los prejuicios y escepticismo relacionados con su pequeño tamaño, al ubicar a Chile, con la capacidad de sus integrantes y audaz estrategia, en el mapa mundial de la ciencia, revolucionando de paso el modelo tradicional de estructurar la ciencia en Chile y mostrando – con su ejemplo – cómo “lograr más con menos”. Sus investigadores hablan en tono de curiosidad, maravilla y ocasionalmente orgullo al describir su emocionante viaje por aguas inexploradas.

La estrategia del CECs es sustentar un entorno científicamente rico donde la ciencia y los científicos son lo primordial – atrayendo a las mejores personas, apoyándolos adecuadamente y ofreciéndoles libertad para perseguir sus sueños.
