Brian Harvey Print
Brian Harvey holds primary degrees in mathematics, physics and physiology. He obtained his PhD in membrane biophysics under the supervision of Roddy Kernan at the National University of Ireland in 1982. He carried out his post-doctoral studies at the Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique, Molecular Biology Laboratories in Villefranche-sur-mer, France, where he was appointed to a permanent position in 1986 as Chargé de Recherche. Brian returned to Ireland in 1992 as Professor of Cell and Molecular Physiology at University College Cork where he established the Wellcome Trust Cellular Physiology Research Unit. In 2002, he was recruited to The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland as Professor of Molecular Medicine at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, and Director of the RCSI Research Institute. In addition to his academic roles, Brian was Ireland’s first and longest serving University Vice-President for Research from 1998-2010 and Director of Research at the International DOCTRID Research Institute from 2010-2017. Brian has received international honours for his scholarship and research. He was made a Chevalier of the French Order of Merit in 2006 by The President of France and a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Palmes Academiques in 2016. He was the first recipient of the International Laureat Prix Servier in 2008. He was appointed Visiting Research Professor at the Université de Paris Descartes in 2013.

In 2000, Brian was elected to the European Academy of Sciences and in 2007 elected to the Royal Irish Academy and was a Founding Fellow of the Irish Academy of Medical Sciences. He was awarded a Doctor of Science honoris causa from Michigan State University in 2013. Brian served on the European Research Council Advanced Awards Panel from 2008-2016 and was President of the French National Research Agency Scientific Evaluation Council from 2015-2017. His current research focuses on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of steroid hormone actions in inflammation and cancer. He has published more than 280 articles in international scientific journals (ORCID Researcher ID Brian has a long-standing collaboration with CECs and has trained PhDs and Post-doctoral fellows from Chile since 2000.
