CECs, Centro de Estudios Científicos (Center for Scientific Studies) is a private, non-profit corporation, devoted to the development, promotion and diffusion of scientific research. CECs was founded in 1984 as the Center for Scientific Studies of Santiago and has since been directed by physicist Claudio Bunster.

Centro de Estudios Científicos has 14 full time researchers: 8 in Biology, 2 in Glaciology and 4 in Physics. There are 45 students: 24 graduates and 21 undergraduates that are receiving training in all the CECs research areas, as well as 8 post doctoral fellows (4 Physicists, 2 Glaciologists and 2 Biologists).

In addition, there are 14 highly trained technicians working in the experimental part of the Biology and Glaciology Laboratories, as well as in the Transgenic Mice Unit.

The CECs research team is also supported by a number of adjunct researchers, both from Chile and abroad. These colleagues have strong ties with our institution, visit it regularly for periods that vary from one week to several months, advise us on research policies, cooperate in specific projects and teach in our advanced courses. The outside researchers in Theoretical Physics are: Marc Henneaux (Solvay Institute, Brussels, Belgium), Mokhtar Hassaine (Universidad de Talca, Chile), and Frank Wilczek (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA). The adjunct academics of the Glaciology and Climate Change laboratory are Robert Thomas (NASA Goddard Space Flight Centro de Estudios Científicos (CECs) Center/Wallops Flight Facility, Virginia, USA), Eric Rignot (NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California, USA), and Jorge Carrasco (Dirección Meteorológica de Chile). The adjunct members of the Biological Sciences section include Jairaj Acharya (National Cancer Institute, USA), Alberto Darszon (Universidad Autónoma de México) and Yoshiaki Kidokoro (Gunma University, Japan).

The performance of CECs may be assessed by its publications, because they are measured by the ISI Web of Science indicators. The following graphs show the evolution over time of the number of CECs publications per year, as well as the number of citations per year. The H-index, which quantifies productivity, is 52 for CECs publications – the highest among similar institutions in South America. CECs’ scientific productivity is comparable to that of the Rowland Institute in Harvard, which has an H-index of 54. This is also a small multidisciplinary research institute, similar to CECs, but possesses a US$ 50-100 million trust fund.
